Frequently asked questions
What is photo metadata, and what exactly does it reveal?
Metadata is data your camera stores inside the file alongside the image, invisible when you look at it. On a phone photo it typically includes the GPS coordinates of where it was taken, the make, model and serial number of the phone, the exact date and time to the second, and sometimes a thumbnail copy of the image from before you edited it. Depending on the format it is called EXIF, XMP or IPTC.
How do I know whether my photo has my GPS location inside it?
Drop it on this page and it tells you immediately. If the photo contains coordinates, they are shown in decimal and in degrees, minutes and seconds. The precision a phone typically records points at one front door rather than a neighbourhood, so it is enough to identify the home a photo was posted from.
Do WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook strip metadata from my photos?
The large social networks usually remove EXIF from the version they display publicly, but that does not protect you in every case. Send the photo as a document or original file and the metadata travels intact. And the platforms read that data before removing it, so they received it regardless. Cleaning the file before you send it is the only part you control.
Does removing metadata reduce image quality?
No. This tool does not re-compress the image: it walks the file and copies everything that is not metadata across byte for byte, so the pixels that come out are identical to the ones that went in. Many sites that offer this redraw the photo onto a canvas, which is easier to build but degrades quality and discards the colour profile.
Can I remove metadata from a PDF too?
Yes. In a PDF the usual fields are the author (almost always the real name on the user account of the computer where it was made), the internal title, the software that produced it, and the creation and modification dates. PDFs must be regenerated to be cleaned, so the text, images and layout are preserved but the file size may shift slightly.
Why can iPhone HEIC photos not be cleaned?
We can read a HEIC’s metadata and show it to you, but not yet rewrite it without risking damage to the file, because the format is a considerably more complex container. In the meantime the practical fix is to share the photo as JPG — the iPhone does this automatically when sending through many apps — and clean that JPG here.
